Multimedia presentation of Lake Cerknica
The Lake is here, no longer here – Images of the Lake, Its People and a Time That Will Not Return
Lake Cerknica never has just one face. It changes with the seasons, the weather, the water and the lives of the people who live beside it. To help visitors experience its true character, the museum also features a multimedia presentation portraying the lake through all four seasons, entitled Jzeru je jzera nej - The Lake is here, no longer here.
Through photography, music and narration, the many faces of Lake Cerknica unfold before us – from a full lake and a flooded karst field to dry riverbeds, sinkholes, snow-covered landscapes and quiet, hidden corners known especially well by the local people.
📷 More Than Photographs – a Record of Time
What makes the presentation particularly valuable is its documentary character. The photographs were taken over many years, as the author followed the lake through different seasons, water levels and moods, capturing moments that can never be recreated in exactly the same way.
The photographs show much more than the lake itself. They bring to life local people, older generations and traditional ways of living by the lake – skating across the frozen lake on traditional wooden skates, old fishing practices, work by the water and small scenes from everyday village life around Lake Cerknica.
Today, these images form a precious record of their time. They document not only an ever-changing karst landscape, but also the knowledge, customs and way of life of generations of people whose lives were closely connected with the lake.
The Lake Through All Four Seasons
The multimedia presentation follows Lake Cerknica through the entire cycle of the year – as the water returns and spreads across the karst field, as the lake reaches its fullness, as the water gradually retreats, and finally as an entirely different, dry landscape is revealed.
Each season brings different colours, sounds, wildlife, activities and stories. Visitors therefore discover not only an extraordinary natural phenomenon, but also the rhythm of life beside the lake and the long-standing connection between people and its constantly changing nature.
Through the Eyes of a Local
The photographs were taken by a local who grew up beside Lake Cerknica, has known it since childhood and has followed its many transformations over the decades.
The multimedia presentation therefore reveals places, events and fleeting moments that a casual visitor would rarely encounter. It offers not only a view of the lake, but also the perspective of a local who, through his photographs, reveals the lake as he knew it, experienced it and followed it over the decades.
🕰️ Images of a Time That Will Not Return
The special value of these photographs lies in their ability to preserve people, traditions, moments and scenes of life around Lake Cerknica that belong to a particular time.
They portray local residents, older generations, former ways of working and living, and scenes that today form a precious memory of the past. Some of the people are no longer with us and many traditions have changed, giving these photographs an even greater documentary and ethnological value.
Jzeru je jzera nej is therefore much more than a presentation of the beauty of Lake Cerknica. It is a valuable record of its natural and cultural heritage and of the people whose lives were intertwined with the lake over the decades.
This is not only the story of a lake. It is also the story of the people who lived with it – and of a time preserved through the camera lens.
